MALDI-TOF has revolutionized identification of bacteria in the clinical laboratory. The identification of mycobacteria and fungi has been an expensive and difficult process with the potential for even greater change with the application of this new technology. We will review the general principles of MALDI-TOF based identification and review the use of this method to identify mycobacteria and fungi and related organisms.
